Dear Friend,
Did you know that the world's largest temperate rainforest is
right here in America? And we could lose it to logging unless we
speak out.
Right now, the Forest Service is determining how Alaska's
Tongass National Forest will be managed over the long term. An
initial proposal allows for a dramatic increase from current
logging levels, putting rare and important old-growth habitat at
risk.
There's good news - before the plan is finalized, the Forest
Service must accept public comment, but only for a limited
period of time.
It will only take a minute of your time, and the clock is
ticking. Just click the link below to send a free message to the
Forest Service:

Tony Palmeri is a Green running for Oshkosh city council. Visit www.tonypalmeri.com to learn more about his views and campaign. Some of you may remember him coming to Kewaunee County to argue both sides of the Troops Home initiative last spring. Merritt and I are going to help out with lit drops this Saturday. If you are willing and able to come along, let me know, and we can drive! Jill Hello Friends, We've got 2 weeks left until Election day April 3! If you have thought about helping out with the Palmeri campaign, but haven't been able to, NOW is your time! We've got our final literature drop THIS WEEKEND: -- Saturday March 24 from 10am - 3pm -- Sunday March 25 from 10am - 1pm We're asking that you give us 2 hours of your time on one of these days. We still have 14 wards that have not received any contact from the campaign! The only way we will reach these definite voters is by getting out our supporters to help with the lit drops. If you can help, please email or call Justin (410-6180) and let him know the time and day. You can pick up the Palmeri Lit and your map/voter list from Justin's house at 652 Monroe St. If you can help more than 2 hours, awesome! A special thanks to Chris and the Oshkosh Firefighting crew for helping get out yard signs and literature this past week! Also I want to thank Dean, Ben, and Mike for helping with the lit drop this past weekend. I hope to hear from you soon! Justin Just a quick update: Tony received the endorsement of the Winnebago County Labor Council - Council President Stephen Dedow stated "Our endorsement process for 2007 was based off of Candidate responses to a mailed questionnaire dealing with working family issues. To be endorsed, a Candidate had to receive at least 90% of the vote from our delegates. We, as a group, feel that the Candidates selected would best represent working families if elected to their respective positions."

I would like to share a reading from the Earth Medicine: by Jamie Sams, the fourth moon, day 10 April 22.
Spirits: Looks Far Woman teaches us about the gifts of talking to spirit and the gifts of prophecy. This clan Mother of the Fourth Moon Cycle is the wise and gentle teacher who knows that we humans are the only ones who direct meanness to one another. We are the directors of energy who use and misuse the ideas of love and fear. It is through our human jealousy and envy that our thoughts take form and are directed negatively towards others. The spirits of nature have no jealousy, or envy or hidden agenda. It is only the unhealed emotions and intents of humanbeings--still hanging in time and space--that wreak havoc in the lives of others. Even these misdirected emotions cannot harm others if they have laughter in their hearts and smiles on their faces. Be happy, be well... Namaste Jim PeaceOWL
Dear Friends,
North Korea's nuclear test last week showed that policies of isolation and threats of regime change will not prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. We need to act quickly, before the Bush Administration makes the same mistakes in Iran. The UN Security Council is scheduled to discuss sanctions on Iran this week, making it critical to get as many people as possible involved in this campaign over the next few days, while world leaders are debating their options. Click below to send a message to President Bush, calling on the US to enter direct negotiations with Iran:
www.CeasefireCampaign.org
The last thing the world needs is a global nuclear arms race, so let's seize this moment to show the Bush Administration that the world has a stake in resolving things with Iran peacefully – and will hold him accountable.
Talks between the US and Iran won't guarantee a solution to the nuclear problem, but no talks will guarantee failure. There is no military solution to this issue, and President Bush's aggressive policies have begun to spark a global nuclear arms race, as countries rush to build nuclear weapons. There have been several calls, even from prominent members of Bush's own Republican Party, to change course. Join this rising chorus by clicking below:
www.CeasefireCampaign.org
The Bush Administration is starting to learn that it ignores global public opinion at its peril. Let's send a strong message to President Bush – forward this email to your friends and family, and encourage them to help prevent the nightmare of a new global nuclear arms race from becoming reality.
Thanks!

Hi Peace Owl,
Thank you for the notice of the gathering at Webster & Mason tomorrow at 1
pm. I plan to attend.
I'm continuing this message almost 4 weeks later.
I went to the gathering and counted myself among those who prefer
non-violence. Went the next week also only this time I had my own sign.
"Let there be peace on our earth. Let it begin with me." and on the other
side," Love thy neighbor as thyself." It's 3' x 4 1/ 2' with a stick in
the middle so I can flip it around and hold it above my head. I used my
printer to print out individual words and letters so the copy is large and
clear and can be read easily from a distance. It makes much sense to me to
practice non-violence (ahimsa). It's a no-brainer. But there are many who
haven't yet come to see that God is in all things; that God is all things (I
am That). It is important to educate and by example let this spiritual
principle become known.
The weather was bitter cold. I dressed for the occasion and got to the
corner 1/2 hour late, at 1:30 pm with my new sign. Just as I got there
everyone left; about 4 people. I was roasty-toasty warm and couldn't see
leaving so alone I stood at the corner and flipped the vital message as the
motorists passed. The wind was brisk and turning the sign around would
change my balance. It was a balance dance that I'm sure was entertaining.
I stayed till 3:00 and by then was feeling frostbite. Time to go home.
Time well spent.
I plan to be there each first Sunday of the month. As the weather gets
better more will show.
Kim's son had a heart attack. Had life saving surgery and is in serious
condition. I don't know any more.
Thank you for the quote by Jamie Sams. Since I've stopped drinking, my
consciousness has taken on a growing sense of living in life rather than
death. I live now in peace, in joy, in gratitude, in service. Each day is
now a gift . I finally feel I'm on the path to God. It's not a great
accomplishment or one few can really see, but when I consider all the gifts
one can receive in life, this one is most precious.
From "The Hindu Mind" by Bansi Pandit, under the heading, "Purity of Reason"
he writes, "The importance of pure reason is heavily emphasized in Hindu
scriptures. In the Gayatri Mantra, the highest and the most sacred Vedic
mantra, a Hindu does not pray for wealth and riches for himself, his family
or his community. Instead he prays for purity of reason for all, "God is
the giver of life, the dispeller of miseries, and the bestower of happiness.
Let us meditate upon that Creator, the most worthy and acceptable Almighty
God. May He inspire and lead our minds and intellects." (Rig Veda 3.62.10
and Yajur Veda 36.3)
Now I know I shall never come to the end of knowledge and I am grateful.
Namaste
Peace and Joy to you and yours,
White Birch

Subject: Can you join us? Meeting with Congressman Kegan's staff person on Iraq - Not one more death, not one more dollar.
A group of us will be meeting with Nate Williams, Congressman Kegan's staff person, in Green Bay on Monday, January 22nd, at 3 PM. (That's this coming Monday).
We will be meeting 1 hour beforehand at 2 PM at Kavarna to organize ourselves.
There is a statewide effort to pressure Congress to stop the War on Iraq. This is a part of that effort.
Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice is coordinating the effort, and has been hosting onference calls with people from all over the state. In our last conference call, we came up with a list of unified points that we want to make. We will be using this list on Monday, as well as points that those attending want to make. Each person will get a chance to say a few sentences.
If you can come join us, please do. We especially need some gender balance - so far we are weighted heavily towards the female gender. Please contact me if you expect to come at jdt@itol.com, or 920 255-2175. I hope you can come - we've got to end this war!
So far, Congressman Kegan has been very supportive of the efforts of thepeace movement.
Here are the points:
We call on Congress to vote down any additional funding for the war in Iraq. This spring, the Administration will ask Congress to authorize a supplemental appropriation for the war of $99.7 billion, plus additional funding for the proposed troop "surge."
It is not enough for Congress to simply criticize the administration's war policy. Congress must stop funding the war. Approving more money for the war will simply give the Administration more flexibility to wage the war without any chance for Congressional control.
Blocking additional funds for the war will not adversely affect our troops. Funding from current appropriations and the substantial regular Pentagon budget is already available to cover the costs of evacuating our troops and providing body armor and defensive equipment. Bringing our troops home is the best way to support them.
Wisconsin voters want to bring the troops home now. Thirty four communities in Wisconsin have approved ballot initiatives or referendums to bring the troops home. In the November election, Wisconsin's statewide totals gave a more than two-to-one "yes" vote on these initiatives.
Wisconsin's Senators Kohl and Feingold and U.S. House Representatives Kind and Ryan have voted for all four previous funding bills for the Iraq war. We call on them to vote "no" for the first time on further funding for the war. Wisconsin's other U.S. House Representatives have mixed records on funding for the Iraq war (except Kagan, who is new). We call on all Wisconsin U.S.
House Representatives to vote "no" on further funding for the Iraq war.
We cannot afford the war, and the current war debts are already a terrible burden on the country. The US may pay over $2 trillion for the war even if we stopped today, according to a Nobel-prize winning economist and Harvard budget expert
[1]. Wisconsin taxpayers will pay $6.0 billion for the war in Iraq. This money could have funded healthcare for over 3.6 million Wisconsin citizens, or funded 715 new elementary schools for Wisconsin
[2] Oil companies and some other corporations have a vested interest in keepingthe war going, but most Americans are hurt by this war and want an end to it now. Most Iraqis also want the US to leave their country.

Do you want your legislators to vote to protect clean water, clean air, natural areas, and sporting opportunities? So do we! On February 21st, 2007, join citizens from across Wisconsin at the state capitol to tell legislators that you expect them to vote well on natural resource issues. Last year, over 250 Wisconsinites descended on the state Capitol to share their conservation values with their State Legislators. Speaking with a unified voice, it was an energizing day for citizens and the conservation community. It opened legislators' eyes to the tremendous support that exists for conservation.

My sincere congratulations to all of those who had been nominated for the PeaceOWL award, and thank you to those who had the hard task of making the choice for this years award receiver. He is a person who many of us know from years of his involvement with the HSC, as a member, a Board of Director, and as our Editor of the HSC newsletter. Mr. Martin Slavek is a devoted son, Father, Grandfather, and a full time volunteer to his community. The environment, peace and social justice action are not just considered movements to him....they are a way of life and are heart felt concerns that are backed up by his personal involvement for these causes which bring us closer to that of true spiritual family in our shared vision of love for the planet and for each other. July 2005 peace_owl1@yahoo.com
Once upon a time, a dreamer was asked for Earth Day to speak to a group of children at their High School. " Let me tell you about the Helpingstone Soup family story, he said. "And maybe it will be helpful for you to understand that the greatest problem being faced by the Mother Earth is from her children." It was not at all uncommon for a group of men to hangout and talk about problems in a tepee that was setup at the edge of a Green Bay park , where a young couple lived with their daughter, and allowed a friend to stay in their tepee. On Sundays they would come togather to speak about dreams and how they could make a difference for the future, the environment, the children and how to create peaceful, social justice in our community. One morning the mother and daughter joined these men, and they suggested, " All we need is to be a spiritual family that will work in harmony. So let us look at the wisdom which has come down to us and try to form our group on those noble ideals." And this became the agreed goal from that day on.
Now "Once upon a time" a young person found himself/herself lost in a world seeking food to share with friends and came to the "river crossing", that now seemed too deep for swimming and had no way for getting to the other side.
More story to come...
