the Peace Owl Award

In honor of our good friend, PeaceOWL, the Helfenstein Soup Council is announcing the PeaceOWL award to be given annually for the next three years to an individual who reflects the spirit of Jim Olmsted in our community.  This is someone choosing to:

  • live in love rather than fear
  • is demonstrating a personal vision of peace, no matter the format or medium
  • involved in the Soup Council directly or indirectly 

If a flower had no smell would it still be beautiful?  The peaceOWL award asks that question, to live in a world which has been at war since recorded history or longer, in a society where crime rates grow each year, and people seem to continue in personal-family violence towards the ones who say that they love..but compassion, hope and forgiveness still continues to exist.  We can live in our fears and never stop to "smell" the flowers or we can see the true beauty in them -in us- which come from a higher spirit.  My prayer is the peaceowl award will be a blessing to someone who can understand this fool's riddle:  For it is in laughter and in joy that we find happiness, this is the Helping Stone soup family gift to all of us.                                                             PeaceOWL

The recipient will receive a certificate and a monetary award to support their vision.  The award will be presented at the Peace and Justice Gathering, September 17, 2005.

      "Congratulations to the Board of Directors and HSC members in the nomination of the PeaceOwl award to be presented to Mr. Marty Slavek.  I want to thank everyone for the nominations made of other people, the names of all those who were suggested deserved to be honored and we are blessed to have so many dedicated people to the causes of the peace and social justice movement."

     "The gentle nature which freely is expressed from Marty in his everyday activities is why he has been selected  to be the first one to receive this award.  He is first a Grandparent and a son full time to his family whenever needed.  To those of us in the recovery community we are forever benefited from the service to the AA newsletter that he volunteers for as the Editor and by that example of how one can overcome fear and find love in return.  The personal commitment to the peace movement and community based on values of social justice for all truly makes him a "peaceowl" who we are grateful to have as our friend in the HSC.  CONGRATULATIONS Marty!
