20 Former World Leaders Call on China to
Change Position on Burma, Support Arms Embargo

Dear Maqrtha,

Pressure is beginning to build up on China to stop its complete support for Burma's military regime.  In a letter to China signed by 20 former Presidents and Prime Ministers from many countries (in PDF format), the leaders call on China.  The leaders call on China to change its position by supporting the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and national reconciliation in Burma and also supporting a global arms embargo on Burma.

This is a major breakthrough -- it may be the first time in history that this many prominent leaders have called for China to support a weapons ban on Burma.

This follows a similar call by Desmond Tutu, in which he said he would boycott the Olympics if China continues its all-out support for the military regime.

When one reads the Olympic slogan "One World, One Dream" it may seem hypocritical to some that China would block a UN initiative to ban arms shipments to a miltary regime that only uses them on their own people.  Yet, it is true.

In fact, the UN Security Council is right now working on a non-binding statement to criticize the slaughter of innocent monks and civilians in Burma, and China is even trying to "water down" the language so it is as weak as possible.  Shameful.

We are only just beginning to fight, and China is going to be hearing from a lot more people in the very near future.  As long as China refuses to do anything meaningful on Burma, we will support an Olympic boycott.  As of now the Olympic games are a shameful tribute to the worst kind of behavior.  Take a minute today to send an email to the Olympic organizers letting them know where you stand.  We want millions of people to email them and let them know you plan to boycott the Olympics: ticketsupport@beijing2008.cn

China is greatly concerned about the possibility of a boycott -- that is why last week they called an emergency press conference in Washington, DC to defend themselves -- but at the press conference, they announced no changes in their policy on Burma.  It was just a sham.

Let's take action today -- let them hear you loud and clear.

Dear Martha,

In the coming month, with the support of Fair Wisconsin, historic legislation to protect same sex couples will be introduced in the Wisconsin Legislature. The fight for equality wages on. We strongly believe that you will want to take part in this effort.

Last year you and thousands of supporters helped change the face of Wisconsin politics. Now Fair Wisconsin is launching a statewide campaign in support of a proposed Domestic Partner Registry that will secure basic fundamental rights for LGBT couples in Wisconsin. This registry will ensure that gay and lesbian couples are allowed hospital visitation, inheritance, and burial rights.

This proposal is a huge step in the right direction for equality and fairness for all Wisconsinites, and it is within our reach. We must raise $30,000 by November 30 to ensure a successful statewide field campaign and legislative effort around the Domestic Partner Registry.

Donate Today !!!

Joining the fight is simple. You can voice your dedication to equality for just $100, $50, or even $25. Your gift will directly fund our field efforts as we travel the state rallying support for the Domestic Partner Registry and legislative campaign to take the fight to the halls of the Capitol.

Please help us raise $30,000 by the end of November so that our voices can be heard! Join Our Campaign for Equality! You have proven your dedication to equality in the past, and we do not want you to miss out on this historic opportunity.

Thank you for your support.

Fair Wisconsin

The Health of Millions of Children is in Bush's Hands

The Senate will be voting today on the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). CHIP provides health coverage to children whose parents do not qualify for Medicaid, but can't afford private insurance. The Senate is expected to pass a bill reauthorizing funding for CHIP for an additional five years -- funding that would guarantee coverage to about 10 million children -- and then the bill will head to George Bush's desk for his signature.

But he has threatened not to sign it.

Bush is threatening to veto this bill because he has his own proposal for CHIP funding, one that would cut off around 800,000 children from receiving the health care they so desperately need.

Send a message to President Bush today urging him to protect these vulnerable children and not veto the CHIP reauthorization bill.

Ask your friends to tell him, too. With hundreds of thousands of messages from across the country, Bush may decide to sign the bill after all. Many Republicans are urging him to do just that, and your voice will help.

Fairness moves forward.  Today, the U.S. Senate passed the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act by a vote of 60 - 39. Earlier this year, on May 3rd, the House of Representatives passed a companion bill, with a strong bipartisan margin of 237 to 180.

We asked you in May to take action and tell your legislators that preventing hate crimes against LGBT persons was important.  You did.  Thanks to your efforts and the efforts of thousands more like you around the country, this bill will go to the President's desk.  Fair Wisconsin strongly encourages President Bush to sign this bill into law.

The leadership of Wisconsin's own Congresswoman, Tammy Baldwin, was critical to the success of this bill. Both Senator Russ Feingold and Senator Herb Kohl voted in favor of this bill.  U.S. Representatives Tammy Baldwin, Steve Kagen, Ron Kind, Gwen Moore, and David Obey also voted in favor of this bill in May.

This legislation offers federal protection for victims of hate crimes targeted because of their race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or disability. This Act is the first piece of federal legislation to protect against hate crimes committed against a person based on their gender identity.

Across the world, illegal logging to satisfy the demand for cheap wood products is destroying vital habitat for tigers, jaguars, orangutans and other wildlife.*

Take Action

Urge your Senators to support a ban on illegally logged wood and wood products. Take action now and help us send 15,000 messages in support of legislation to ban the importation of illegally logged wood.
Tiger face (Photo: Corel)Tiger Fact: In the early 1900s, there were around 100,000 tigers throughout their range. Today, only an estimated 4000-5500 exist in the wild.

Dear Wildlife Supporter, Across the world, illegal logging, driven by the demand for cheap wood products, is destroying vital habitat for tigers, jaguars, orangutans and other wildlife… and driving some of the planet’s most beloved wildlife to the brink of extinction.
We can stop the destruction. Urge your Senators to co-sponsor the Combat Illegal Logging Act of 2007 (S.1930) today and take a concrete step to save the places our wildlife needs to survive.
The insatiable demand for cheap wood products and luxury hardwoods in the United States, Europe and Japan is driving illegal logging operations worldwide. Yet America has no law against importing illegally harvested wood into the U.S.
From Borneo to the Amazon to Siberia, illegal logging is the first step in a devastating cycle of forest habitat loss, animal poaching and carbon emissions.
  • Indonesia: a U.N. report estimates that 98% of Indonesia’s forests -- home to orangutans, sun bears, tigers and rhinos -- could disappear within 20 years. The government of Indonesia estimates that 73% of all logging in the country is illegal;
  • Peru: The Amazon -- where jaguars, ocelots, and macaws thrive -- is under attack by mahogany traffickers. The vast majority of Peruvian mahogany -- 80% of which is illegally logged -- is destined for the U.S.;
  • Russia: The Far Eastern forests, home to the planet’s largest cat, the Amur tiger, are being leveled to feed the factories and furniture mills of China, many of which send products to the U.S.
Encourage your Senators to support a ban on the importation of illegally logged wood and help save vital habitat for tigers, jaguars and other wildlife.
Illegal logging triggers a chain of events that results in further deforestation, large fires and carbon emissions. This reckless and unregulated logging often occurs in national parks and indigenous reserves, destroying large areas of intact habitat that many critically endangered species need to survive.
The Combat Illegal Logging Act --  introduced by Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) -- will give enforcement agencies a powerful tool in the fight against illegal timber traffickers by making it a crime to knowingly import, sell, buy or transport illegally-sourced wood and wood products.
It’s time to send a message to international timber syndicates that America will no longer accept the environmental destruction that comes with illegal logging. Please take action today…
